Iain Abernethy is one of the UK's leading exponents of applied karate and kata application (bunkai).

His books and DVDs demonstrate in both Wado-ryu and Shotokan (so good for us) kata methods.

I can recommend his work with the highest regard.

A good start off, is his book bunkai-jutsu, one the best karate books Ive read. You can get this book at any good book shop (including borders) or online.
From what you have shown me I would agree.

I have Abernethy's book "Bunkai Jutsu", and it is not bad. However, his DVDs are better, at least for me. It is a difference reading about a technqiue and seeing it. Since there are no dojos here in the West doing anything applied whatsoever (no bunkai, no self-defense applications, and most certainly no freestyle kumite), I had to look for alternatives. These DVDs have now become the backbone of my training. They are great, especially the "Bunkai Jutsu" series.

By the way, I would advise against buying his DVDs from Amazon, you get a discount (3for2) when buying directly from his webpage. Since the DVDs are fairly expensive, that makes a big difference.
Maybe us at satori should get our butts in gear and make more videos on application.

Then you can have some free source material friend.
Books by sensei vince morris are also great.
