There are loads of so called Aikido Verse Karate, Kickboxing displays on you tube.

They are so unreal, I would love to set up a real display with fast punchs, real low kicks and any other bread and butter techniques. Then we could see how floored Aikido really is.

I do respect all martial arts, but these Aikido people who say they are number 1 are very deluded. Unless there opponents are drunk or very ill they couldnt do 90% of their techniques.

Sorry but but false claims really grind my gears.
Although I prefer very much a martial art which offers offensive tactics (and especially Karate, of course Wink ), I think Aikido is very interesting. This martial art is completely defensive, to my knowledge it does not have a single offensive move.

I have been to some lessons approximately two years ago. Certainly they completely lack offensive moves due to their philosophy (they exclusively use the energy of the attacker), but in the defensive they seem pretty effective. They are trained to be very swift and their grips give them a fair range. And should they manage to get hold of you while you are attacking them, you will wonder where you are flying to ... Big Grin

I agree that Karate is more effective, but I would not underestimate Aikido.
I have practiced Aikido myself and do not underestimate it. I just think that overcomplicated self defence is a unwise tactic. Also for someone to grab a wrist in the air flying at 100kph is very unlikey. Karate uses locks holds and throws but only if the situation occurs where they will be effective. When threated hit first, rather then risk being knock down and kicked on the floor. Ive have seen it happen many times.

Funakoshi stated that the first line of defence is a pre-emptive attack. Why risk bodily harm or even death.

Keep it simple, combat is very different on the street than it is in the Dojo.
Okay, my fists do not fly with 100kph (yet?), but I never managed to hit the advanced students there, not even close. Quite impressed me. I will have to train intensively in Karate before I try that game again. *g*

P.S.: What happened to "karate ni sente nashi"?

If you read Funakoshi, you will find that first attack and pre emptive are two different things. Anything agressive toward one is an attack, where a pre-emptive strike is a defensive attack.

example: someone goes to attack (a raised fist, the intension of attack), if you strike them first this is a pre-emptive attack, hence a form of defence.

I hope this clears things up. In the real world waiting for someone to punch you then blocking the attack then striking back is very very hard, and leaves you vulnerable.

I am not a violent person, but i am a deep believer in the pre-emptive strike to protect myself.

Study more deeply to find the truth, Funakoshi is can often misinterpreted.
Aye aye, mon capitaine!
I feel now using the word crap, was a mistake. It was just the you tube claims that got to me.

I am sorry to world of Aikido.
I've trained in both aikido and muay thai, not to any great level but just enough to be a danger to myself. Kido is alright have to agree with neilung though would rather slap somebody first than try to catch their punch in mid air and then twist their arms off. Would take years of dedicated practice and then your still risking them giving you a kick which there didnt seem to be many techniques to deal with kicks taught at the club i was at, but to be fair they did seem more interested in a pint afterward than the techniques.

Would suggest good techniques in all martial arts. Chinese meal job pick and choose the ones that work for you and keep it simple, stay alive.

Indeed.

Aikido and Tai Chi etc. the so called esoteric martial arts do have great techniques; however they take years to master a good 10-20 depending on your natural aptitude.

Where as you can benefit from the so called harder arts Kung Fu, Karate, Muay Thai etc. within 6 months - 2 years again dependent on skill. Also these arts especially Kung Fu, Karate then find similar techniques to the esoteric arts after years of deep study.

But the main point I will make is if you want to open a door would you
A: turn the handle and push it open or
B: do a head stand, remove your shoe, extend your toe and slowly turn the handle with your toe, then flip up turn around and push it open backwards with your nose.

think about it

option B
